Fungi and plants are sessile (immobile) which cannot move or fly to new habitats like animals.
Their immobility generally leaves only two ways for fungi and plants to extend their range: they can grow into an adjoining area, or disperse spores or seeds. Most fungal spores are single cells. They can travel beyond the physical limits of their parent into more distant territory.
Spore dispersal is important in order to ensure the survival of its species, a fungus must produce and release spores as quickly as possible.
Different types of fungi use different methods to disperse their spores over a wide area.
